Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine: On Tuesday, November 2, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine for vaccination against COVID-19 for children ages 5 to 11 years. The Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric COVID-19 vaccine is administered as a two-dose primary series, three weeks apart, but is a lower dose (10 micrograms) than that used for individuals 12 years of age and older (30 micrograms). COVID-19 Boosters: Booster doses are available for ages 12 years and older who received their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at least five months ago. Individuals 18 years and older who received their second dose of the Moderna vaccine at least five months ago are eligible for a booster dose. For those who received the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine, a booster shot is recommended for those who are 18 and older and were vaccinated at least 2 months ago. 

A second booster dose is now available for individuals who are at the highest risk for severe illness or death from COVID-19. The following individuals are eligible to receive a second COVID-19 booster dose:

• People 50 years of age and older who received an initial mRNA booster dose (Pfizer or Moderna) at least four months ago may receive a second booster dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
• Individuals 12 years of age and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised and received an initial mRNA booster dose (Pfizer or Moderna) at least four months ago may receive a second booster dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer, ages 12+; Moderna, ages 18+).
• Adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine at least four months ago may receive a second booster dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna).

Third Doses (for immunocompromised): Beginning Friday, August 27, 2021, the MCHD will be offering the third dose of mRNA to immunocompromised individuals at least 28 days after they received the second shot in the two-dose series of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. MCHD encourages interested individuals to consult with their physician to determine whether they are eligible for this third dose. When obtaining a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine at MCHD, the client will be required to complete a form documenting that they are eligible for the shot. No one will be required to disclose the specific health condition that makes them vulnerable.

The MCHD offers the COVID-19 vaccine by appointment at the Mercer County Health District office. The Moderna vaccine is currently offered to anyone 18 years of age and older. The Pfizer vaccine is currently offered to anyone 12 years of age and older (minors must have parental consent). The Pediatric Pfizer vaccine is currently offered to ages 5-11 years. Multiple providers are now offering COVID-19 vaccine in Mercer County. The list below provides the vaccine type and contact information to schedule appointments with each provider. Please note that the amount and type of vaccine offered by each provider will vary depending on supply and demand.

Pertussis

Pertussis, also know as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease.  Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes it hard to breathe.  Pertussis can affect people of all ages, but can be very serious, even deadly, for babies less than a year old.  The best way to protect against pertussis is by getting vaccinated.

Head Lice

Adult head lice are roughly 2-3 millimeters long.  Head lice infest the head and neck and attach their eggs to the base of the hair shaft.  Lice move by crawling; they cannot hop or fly.  Head lice infestation is spread most commonly by close person-to-person contact.
